GOG Adds LucasArts Games to Library

lucasarts-classic-logoThe vintage game updater and store, GOG.com, has added another new publisher to its catalogue and the internet has come mental over it. As of yesterday, GOG added classic LucasArts (AKA LucasFilm Interactive) debuted on the store with six games and the promise of over 20 games to be released on GOG in total.

In the first set of released games, there are six games, including three games which are getting their first release through digital distribution. New to digital is Sam & Max Hit the Road. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis make up the non-Star Wars releases. From LucasFilm’s flagship franchise, there is Knights of the Old Republic along with the long-awaited digital debuts of Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: Tie Fighter. As of writing, each game is available for $9.99 or less (with KOTOR and Secret of Monkey Island on sale for 20% at the moment).

According to GOG’s official announcement, the deal with Disney Interactive, the current owners of LucasArts (in effect) after Disney purchased LucasFilm, allows for over 20 games to be released on GOG. The company has promised new releases over the coming months. Unfortunately, they haven’t given any hint about what those upcoming games are. If public pressure is any indication, Grim Fandango and the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight franchises would be big sellers should they hit GOG. I’ve always been kind of partial to the Rebel Assault series. As objectively poor as they were, I had fun playing those games.

So with LucasArts games coming to GOG and being available without DOSbox trickery, I’d imagine that most of us are over the freaking moon right now. I would be more so but my old joystick runs on a parallel port (I think) so I won’t be able to use it. That’s a shame. Maybe I can pwn Rebels in my various Imperial fighters with a controller. Assuming I can controller with one hand and keyboard with the other…
